Blonde ray
Raja brachyura
Also known as: Skate
Overview
Blonde ray sustainability varies, so make sure you check where it's from. When caught in the Southern North Sea or eastern English Channel, it is OK but needs improvements. All other blonde ray are Fish to Avoid as the fishing pressure is too high, or we don’t know enough about the population.
Many skate and ray species are unsustainable, and because most products are simply labelled as ‘skate wing’, it’s important to know which species you’re buying. If you don’t know the species you’re buying, it’s best to avoid eating it. Skate wings are sold in UK supermarkets, fishmongers, and seafood restaurants.
