Albacore tuna
Thunnus alalunga
Also known as: Bonito
Overview
The sustainability of albacore tuna varies, but there are many good options. For the Best Choices, check the label for the fishing method and choose pole-and-line or troll-caught albacore tuna. These methods have lower levels of bycatch of vulnerable species such as seabirds, turtles and sharks. Albacore tuna is sold in UK supermarkets, usually in tins, and is also available as fresh or frozen steaks. You may also find it at fishmongers and in seafood restaurants, although yellowfin tuna is often more common. The sustainability of yellowfin tuna also varies.
